Get Ready for Spring Cleaning

Springtime de-clutter, clean and organize!

Spring brings the promise of new beginnings. The delicate scent of blossoms fill the air while dust rags and bottles of spray cleaner fill your hands. Yes, it's time for spring cleaning! If that statement doesn't make your scrubbing fingers twitch with excitement, you may be interested in learning how to get the job done as quickly and painlessly as possible. Here are four tips to help you prepare and organize before your hand ever even touches a rubber glove:

1. Clutter--Out!
Spring cleaning is synonymous with deep, in-the-corner cleaning. But you can't clean those corners if you can't see them. On the other hand, taking the time to de-clutter every room can extend your cleaning well into the summer. But there is a way to clear the clutter from any room in a snap. Grab one trash bag and one large storage container. Set a timer for 10 minutes and fill the trash bag with everything that needs to be thrown away. When the timer goes off, you're done. Now set it again, and fill the storage container with all the things you want to give away, put in storage, repair or otherwise organize. The room is now ready for serious cleaning and you can go through the items in the storage bin at your leisure.

2. Gather Your Tools
Never waste time looking for a scrub brush again. Put together a cleaning kit you can carry with you from room to room, and you'll have everything you need at your fingertips. Place these items in a large cleaning bucket with a handle for a cleaning kit on the go:

  • 1 spray bottle each of all-purpose cleaner, disinfecting cleaner, glass cleaner
  • Scouring powder
  • 1 scrub brush
  • 1 toothbrush
  • A squeegee
  • Several lint-free cleaning cloths
  • Rubber gloves

Have your cleaning and organizing supplies on hand.

3. Purchase Organizing Basics
No matter how good of a job you did last spring, there always seems to be a need for more organizational tools. Take a trip to the dollar store and buy a stash of hooks, clips, labels, magnetic holders, small bins, shelves and containers before you even get started with cleaning.

4. List It
Make a list of all the chores that need to be completed in each room for your inner Martha to be satisfied--and stick to it. One of the best ways to get sidetracked during spring cleaning is to give in to the spontaneous idea that you just must absolutely, positively right now re-grout the bathroom tiles. Maybe the grout does need replacing, but don't tackle any non-essential time-consuming jobs until you've completed all the basics.
